Since 2008, the Brazilian director and researcher Janaina Leite has been researching on the use of documentary and biographical material on stage. From this period, besides spectacles, she also wrote “Performative Self-writing: from the diary to the scene”, published by the renowned Editora Perspectiva.
This laboratory, theoretical and practical, exposes the steps of this trajectory and adds examples from the visual arts, performance and theater, to distinguish what would be the real as “subject” in scene from the real as “irruption”, as an event. The lab will also reflect on gender representations based on the concept of “abjection”, proposing a “crisis” movement that oscillates between identification and repulsion.

Janaina Leite is a brazilian actress, director and playwright. PhD student at USP’s School of Communication and Arts, she is one of the founders of the award-winning Grupo XIX de Teatro from São Paulo. With the shows “Separation party: a scenic documentary” and “Conversations with my father” she started her research on the documentary and the use of biographical material on scene. She directes workshops and talks all over Brazil.
She’s author of the book “Performative Auto-writing: from the diary to the scene”, published by Editora Perspectiva. She also directs the research nuclei “Female Abject 1” and “Female Abject 2 – The Vortex of the Male”, crucial for the development of her new show “Stabat Mater”, considered the best show of 2019 in Brazil by the critics of Jornal Estadão and Folha de São Paulo.
