ESCAVAÇÕES is part of a long-term body of work that we have been developing in various cities, which we call DERIVAS.
As a practice of territorial investigation that involves the participation of local communities and stakeholders at different stages, DERIVAS is strongly site-specific in nature.

Immersing oneself in the landscape, creating multi-layered cartography, engaging in fictional anthropology, exploring the “spirit of place,” and uncovering the micro-histories of the people, objects, and entities that inhabit these spaces—these are some of the key concepts.

In Penafiel, we aimed to develop the project over an extended period, incorporating several residencies and planning for the sharing of an initial phase—a “first movement”—in October 2026.

“Life, in its totality, is contained within spaces and places that are only accessible to us through experience—by living within them.” In these projects, we prefer to set out into the territory without predefined maps or routes, allowing the places themselves to show us the way forward. Our starting point: the dead city of Mozinho. The ‘thought’ of the stones strikes us as an intriguing gateway for approaching Penafiel.
