ESCAVAÇÕES is part of a long-term body of work we have been developing across various cities, which we call DERIVAS.
In PENAFIEL, we proposed developing this project as a biennial initiative, with the sharing of a “first movement” scheduled for 2026.
Stone extraction and processing are central to the region, present in many ways within local communities. The craft of working with stone stretches back through time; though often overlooked or under-studied, it is a practice that leaves deep marks on bodies, lives, imaginations, and landscapes, shaping identities and ways of dwelling.
Taking stone as our guide, we set out into the territory to document it across various states and temporalities: wild yet domesticated, remote yet contemporary, revered yet worked—found in architecture, nature, museums, ruins, poetry, daily life, and dreams…
