ESCAVAÇÕES is part of a long-term cycle of work we have been developing across various cities, which we call Derivas.
A territorial research practice involving the participation of local communities and agents at different stages, Derivas has a strong site-specific character.
Immersion in the landscape, layered cartography, fictional anthropology, the spirit of places, and the micro-histories of the people, objects, and entities that inhabit them are some of its key ideas.
In Penafiel, we wanted to develop the project over an extended period of time, planning several residency phases and the sharing of a first movement in October 2026.
“Life as a whole is gathered within spaces and places that are only accessible to us by experiencing and inhabiting them.”
In these projects, we like to set out into the territory without predefined maps or routes, allowing the places themselves to guide us. Starting point: the dead city of Mozinho. The thought of stones has begun to seem to us a curious gateway through which to approach Penafiel.
