“In the autumn, your route takes you from Alaska to northern Mexico and, in the spring, back to the north. Unlike most birds, this sparrow has a highly unusual ability, during migrations, to stay awake for seven days. Such behavior allows you to fly and sail at night and look for food during the day without resting. In the past five years, the United States Department of Defense has spent copious sums to study these creatures. At different universities, especially in Madison, Wisconsin, publicly funded researchers have been studying the brain activity of birds during the long periods when they do not sleep, in the hope of gaining knowledge that can apply to humans. The aim is to find out how people can not sleep and, in addition, to function with productivity and efficiency. ” (24/7, Jonathan Crary, Antigone)
