OR (from Latin aut) Conjunction that indicates alternative or optionality.
In 2022, Panaíbra Gabriel Canda was in residence at CRL – Central Elétrica, giving rise to the desire to develop together a project that had a strong connection to Mozambique. From the first conversations, the idea arose of rooting him in a place, in a landscape, as a starting point for “a long conversation”. The idea of good meetings and the transformative power of good conversations is among the first principles, with the aim being that the project constitutes, above all, a compliment to the full encounter.
Inhambane, the land of Panaíbra’s father, is also the land where Vasco da Gama and his crew arrived more than 500 years ago, naming it “Land of Good People”.
Colonization and post-colonization are naturally core thematic units of the project and we want to think about them from an overlap of times: past, present, future.
“Contemplation of great things from the past consists of welcoming them into our space. We are not the ones who transport ourselves into them, they are the ones who enter our lives.” Walter Benjamin
Spatializing time, immersing the past in a dreamlike layer, and valuing constellation thinking are some of this author’s suggestions that inspire us.
“Memory is rooted in concrete, in spaces, gestures, images and objects.” Pierre Nora
We are interested in thinking about History from the perspective of the landscape, continuing with research into what Paul Carter called “politics of the ground”, that is, “a new step that does not repress and flatten the land, but that lets the ground climb the body, determining its gestures, the entire movement, reinventing a new social choreography”.
