CiRcoLando – Central Elétrica will once again present WATTS – Ciclo Sonoro in 2023, which has the support of DGArtes, the Criatório program of the Porto City Council and the Iberescena program – Fondo de Ayudas para las Artes Escénicas Iberoamericanas. This edition of the Cycle will take place on the 21st and 22nd of July in the usual spaces of the Central Elétrica, at CACE Cultural in Porto, and presents us with an international program with Sajjra, Tomás Tello, Zancudo Berraco, Mariana Sardon and others for two days of performances and sound sculptures, concerts and audiovisual installations.
On the 21st of July, starting at 9 pm, we will have Imago Besta, from CAPRA Arte Colectivo at the Black Box in Central. Diving into the European imaginary of the monster figures of the 15th-17th centuries, the vocal sound performance gives life and sound to these “beasts”, in an attempt to re-signify and twist the hegemony that was inscribed in their bodies, making it possible, through an inverse dialogue, the emergence of a mestizo identity, a kind of transoceanic Frankenstein. On that day at 10 pm, João Bento presents us with a live version of DeGELO – MATÉRIA VIVA. The sound sculpture, alive and fluid, intends to transmit sensations and emotions associated with the natural phenomenon of thawing, working and rediscovering new perspectives of relationship with the matter of ice, whether with music, the body or with the use of different materials. At 11 pm in the outdoor area, Sajjra joins the programme, with industrial influences and the heavy and slow atmosphere of the shows in the Andes, to present SRPNT S PRSNT. We close the first day of WATTS at 12 am with Homem do Robe who brings us his latest album BRO GESSO, served with fumes of hardbass, ghetto house and minimal techno with simple and ironic lines inspired by the daily life of Vale do Ave.
Saturday, July 22, opens at 9 pm in the Sala Branca of the Central Elétrica with Moira, by Margarida Cabral. Inspired by the Moiras of Greek mythology, the artistic research project brings to the forefront the meditative and solitary practice of sewing, combining it with the creative process of sound performance in an accumulative process of memory objects. At 10 pm, Mariana Sárdon presents us with BANANAS SOUND SYSTEM, a sound creation with an amplification system of electronic synthesis instruments broadcasted on suspended speakers in cardboard boxes initially intended for the international transport of bananas, designed to travel and imperfectly suitable for a sound system which is precarious and politically concerned. Also on the 22nd of July at 11 pm, Tomás Tello joins the outdoor area of the event with the concert Burbuja de Lava, and offers us the solvency of the electric guitar with the use of casiotones, manipulated pedals and effects, rattles, quenas and some percussive instruments. At 12 am, Zancudo Berraco, one of the incarnations of the musician and artist Henrique Apolinário, closes the 2023 WATTS edition with a set that will command the body to move and free the mind to unfathomable dimensions, where the pulse of techno is entangled in bass lines acidic notes, synesthetic arpeggios and rough textures in a game of light and shadow with no defined destination.
Linha de Erosão, from Vinicius Ferreira, will be present on the two days of the Cycle from 8.30 pm to 11.30 pm. An audiovisual installation that presents, through lights, sound and video, elements of nature inserted in an ecosystem in constant transformation in an immersive environment.
The space has free parking and there will be food and drinks for sale on site.
Access to the event is free; tickets must be booked.
