NORDESTE is a collective creation project proposed by CRL – Central Elétrica within Festival Simbiose, financed through the Norte 2020 program. The general objective of Simbiose is to boost cultural networking programming in the municipalities of Miranda do Douro, Vinhais and Macedo de Cavaleiros. It is based on the co-production and itinerancy of shows focused on identity elements of Trás-os-Montes (cultural and natural), involving the intense participation of local communities and cultural groups.
The artistic work with the intangible heritage of the regions is always a difficult, yet very stimulating challenge. Rituals, traditions, beliefs, stories, testimonies, dances, songs, objects find in the artistic field a place of re-reading and updating that seems particularly interesting to us. How to care for, disseminate, deepen knowledge about the heritage and create unique, innovative, relevant artistic objects is our great challenge.
Nordeste is a transdisciplinary walking performance, crossing theatre, dance, video and music, that thematically explores the universe of Masks and Rituals linked to winter festiviteis and the universe of Pauliteiros dances.
The evocation of pre-Christian cultures, the cult of the sun and the earth cycle, initiation and fertility rituals, the celebration of the mysterious, the occult, the wildest and most untamed human dimensions are some of the topics that we approach freely and poeticly.
We also decided to approach traditional rituals and festivities focusing on the future. More than its nostalgic celebration, we are interested in debating the processes of updating traditions and asking what lies at its core that needs to be preserved. The issues of the “recovery” of festivals, the patrimonialization of rituals and traditions, the touristification of celebrations are themes that we wish to reflect and debate about.
The work will include an important research dimension, organized in several phases over time, with premieres and presentation cycles in each municipality scheduled between May and July.
08 June, 9pm, Casa do Povo de Macedo de Cavaleiros: Conversation “New rituals for old festivities”
07 July, 9 pm, Centro Cultural de Vinhais: Conversation “Imagined Trás-os-Montes: between myth and reality”
In addition to the show, we designed associated activities that precede it and that aim to publicize the creative process, but also offer the local community a space for discussion and dialogue on the central themes of the project.
In Miranda do Douro, we invited Gualdino Fernandes Raimundo, rehearser of the new generations of Pauliteiros from Associação Caramonico from Palaçoulo and Mário Correia, ethnomusicologist, deeply interested in the manifestations of traditional culture in Terra de Miranda, to talk about the theme of the Dança dos Pauliteiros, opening space for discussion of the origins and future of this tradition.
In Macedo de Cavaleiros, the conversation will revolve around the theme of masks and rituals of winter festivals, addressing the importance of these festivals for local communities, but also the new challenges posed by their tourist demand, reflecting on the dynamics of patrimonialization and the mutations that result from this encounter between the local and the world. Our guest speakers are Patrícia Cordeiro, sociologist and coordinator of the nomination of Carnival of Podence inscribed in the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, UNESCO, and Xerardo Pereiro, PhD in Anthropology and Tourism and effective researcher at CETRAD where he develops research on tourism anthropology, rural-urban relations, cultural heritage and tourism.
In Vinhais we will approach the myths and realities of the Trás-os-Montes landscape with Roberto Afonso and António Pinelo Piza.
The conversations will be followed by a musical moment with video projection. This cine-concert “Alvorada” will consist of an experimental approach to the sounds and images of the northeast of Trás-os-Montes, an exploration of sound artists Nuno Preto and João Sarnadas, with manipulation of archival images by the filmmaker Gonçalo Mota.
