O Pecado de João Agonia continues the operation to rescue the words of Bernardo Santareno which started with the production of A Promessa, in 2017. . As a common denominator for the two projects, we find the director João Cardoso, artistic director of ASSéDIO, a company that shares a new incursion into the territory of a playwright who practiced a “poetics with roots”. The Sin of João Agonia (1961) is part of a set of plays where Santareno affirms a strategy of opposition to an oppressive system, problematizing aspects of a sexual nature (homosexuality) and issues of a religious nature (sin, sacrifice). This incitement to a kind of “disobedience to dogmas” is experienced here within a tight community circle – a “primitive mountainous place”, Salazar Portugal, a country that is still ours. A place where the “wind burns” and the sky is filled with black birds on the night of the crime. “Don’t go, João Agony! Run, run!”
