“STBY”, a multimedia performance by visual artist Rodrigo Miragaia, is composed of six acts in which music and video are manipulated live, offering a reflection and resistance to the concept of time shaped by capitalism and our dependence on new technologies.
An acronym for stand by—the pause mode of electronic devices—STBY, in the context of the performance, takes on the meaning of time suspension, a refusal of the linear Western concept of time which, legitimized by the exact sciences, has built the “integrated global technocapitalism.” STBY proposes a meta-time, aligned with the cosmos, the rhythm of nature, improvisation, and the intentions of art.
An installation made of acrylic glass serves simultaneously as a set and as a surface for images inspired by low-resolution 1980s video games, projected through old monitors. The music, in dialogue with these visual elements, establishes a relationship between retro low-fi aesthetics and contemporary themes, addressing issues such as time and freedom.
