Culture Moves Europe 2024/25 – Open Call until October 19th!
Located in an old thermoelectric power plant in Freixo, Circolando – Central Elétrica is a center for residencies and artistic creation on the outskirts of Porto that seeks to re-signify part of this deactivated industrial center, pulsating and generating other forms of energy. In recent years, we have broadened our view of disciplinary intersections, promoting intersectional artistic encounters where notions of real and abstract boundaries are erased.
After the recent approach to the artistic context of the Balkans, we would like to extend this call to new territories. In this call, we will select 02 artists from Eastern Europe to develop artistic residencies in person at Central Elétrica, in Porto, Portugal, between January 3 and February 2, 2025. The results will be presented to the public in an informal exhibition at WATTS – Cycle of Art and Sonorities.
We want to take a new step in the consolidation of Central Elétrica’s project, linking Portugal with countries with little historical connection, and at the same time offering these young artists the opportunity for international dialogue. The experience gained in 25 years of activity will allow us to understand the production of tools necessary for each project.
The proposals submitted should come from Eastern European territories – Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Moldova, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Northern Macedonia, Kosovo and Albania – in the firm belief that this dialogue with our local audience will contribute to the real construction of a Europe based on solidarity and cooperation between states and peoples.
Beyond origin, we will also pay special attention to projects that engage in a dialogue with our creative driving themes for 2025 – Memory and Landscape – and that work at the intersection of music and performance, with the aim of deepening the exchange of knowledge and artistic practices.
Each artist selected will receive rehearsal space, artistic guidance, financial support, airfare, lodging, and meals.
Applications must be submitted in Portuguese or English by October 19 at 23:59 (Porto time: GMT +0), using a special form that must be completely filled out and sent to p.vilela@circolando.com with the subject line “INSCRIPTION CULTURE MOVES EUROPE”.

RESIDENCY SUPPORT
The residency and final presentation will take place at Central Elétrica, located at CACE Cultural do Porto, Portugal.
Circolando – Central Elétrica will provide:
- A grant of 1.000 euros before taxes (one thousand euros), upon presentation of an invoice;
- Daily allowance of €25 per person per day as a contribution to food, local transport, etc.
- Travel allowance of €350 per person for a round-trip (note: for short distances of under 600 km, travelling by airplane is only allowed in exceptional and well-justified cases)
- Top-ups, which are allocated to each participant based on individual travel plans and needs (Green; Overseas Countries and Territories or Outermost Regions, Visa, Family)
- Accommodation in a single room in a shared apartment;
- Possibility of an artistic direction of the project;
- Promotion of the project through email to Circolando’s national and international contacts, social media and website;
- Organization of a final public presentation of an informal nature at the Central Elétrica, located at CACE Cultural in Porto, Portugal
