Alexander Fleming, looking for substances that kill bacteria in wounds, realized that, after a few weeks of vacation, one of his cultures had been contaminated by a fungus and solved his problem, discovering penicillin. Albert Hofmann, while studying derivatives of ergoline, a natural substance of some fungi, was forced to interrupt his research due to the mind-boggling symptoms he was experiencing, and that’s how LSD appeared. Recently, a pharmaceutical company was unsuccessfully testing a drug against the disease that narrows the veins that carry blood to the heart, when it realized that blood flow was being stimulated in another organ of the body, creating viagra.
There is a point in common in these narratives: the presence of chance as a guiding thread, resulting from the time dedicated to experimentation, research and the generation of new formulations, sometimes to questions not even formulated.
